Understanding the Basics of An Apostille
Most people never heard of the word Apostille until they needed one, right? First let’s make sure you comprehend and can define the word Apostille. There are many different meanings, but according to travel.state.gov, it states, “Apostilles authenticate the seals and signatures of officials on public documents such as birth certificates, court orders, or any other document issued by a federal agency or certified by an American or foreign consul.” It refers to the authentication of documents under the terms of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents. To sum it up, it’s a meticulous, strategic process used to execute various forms of documents, legally, from one country to another! It’s a French term that means “certification”. Pronunciation can vary in English terms, but the French term is pronounced (ap-pow-stee) not like the “gospel” term apostille (uh-paa-stil). An Apostille has nothing to do with the validity or authenticity of the docs! However, has everything to do with the certifications of the signatures written on the doc, the origin of the doc and the necessary legalization process for acceptance in another country.
